This is a very moving piece, John! It reminds me of superstition and the question of whether or not superstition is perception or reality. Did you do well because you thought rubbing your toes was making you do well? Did you do well naturally and attribute it to rubbing your toes? Or did you actually rub your toes and then do well, meaning that if you did not rub your toes, you would do poorly? It is impossible to ever know, but I think the important takeaway here is believing in one of those 3 methodologies, and clinging to it. And when you choose, why not choose the one that crafts the best story — that your rubbing leads to your success. Life is the most exciting and memorable that way!
